The original Gibson Futura electric guitars were produced in 1957 and 1958. A prototype instrument, the original Futura was never mass-produced, but served as a precursor to the Gibson Explorer model, first issued in 1958 as well. In the 80's, Gibson introduced another Futura line with a very different body shape. Rather than the asymmetrical body associated with the Futura name, this version was a modified version of the Gibson Corvus with the same futuristic shape, but differently proportioned and with a "split-V" shaped headstock.
Today's Gibson Futura electric guitars are in Gibson's Epiphone line, and echo the sleek, futuristic lines of the popular Explorer. At a lower price point than the original Explorer, Gibson Futura electric guitars are an excellent choice for the pro, semi-pro or even an amateur musician who wants Gibson quality and the Explorer look, but can't quite afford the Explorer's higher price tag. Even at the lower price point, Gibson Futura electric guitars feature high quality features, materials and sound, making them a welcome addition to any musician's stable of instruments.
At one time considered the lower echelon Gibson line, Epiphone has raised the bar in recent years, adding the Elitist line of upscale instruments, as well as a signature guitar collection that includes Slash and Zakk Wylde models. With top-of-the-line features and materials, Gibson Futura electric guitars are an example of this push forward into a high level of style and quality, providing a great value at a reasonable price – always Epiphone's central goal.
With humbucker pickups at the bridge and neck, Gibson Futura electric guitars offer solid attack and sustain for solo riffs, as well as a fat sound for rhythm work. This thick sound is particularly appreciated by hard rock or metal guitarists. 24 jumbo frets provide full two octaves of play. The solid mahogany body, combined with a set maple neck, also contributes to the high quality, versatile sound and excellent sustain. With its modern, eye-catching design and solid, flexible sound, Gibson Futura electric guitars have something for any guitarist.
