Gibson Sonex Electric Guitar

Gibson Sonex Electric Guitars were produced as lower-priced guitars between 1980 and 1984. The Gibson Sonex line was first introduced in 1980 in an attempt by Gibson to regain the fading sales of the S-1 and Marauder lines. Gibson Sonex electric guitars came in four models, the Deluxe, Standard, Custom and Artist, each with slightly different hardware and finishes. The Deluxe model was the cheapest Gibson electric guitar ever with the cost of $299.

Gibson Sonex electric guitars had a unique body design referred to as a "Multi-phonic" body, made of a new material called Resonwood. Advertised as being as light as mahogany but as dense as maple, the Resonwood body surrounded a wood core. The bolt-on neck was anchored to the core, while the Resonwood exterior gave the guitar strength and resilience. The Multi-phonic body also provided excellent tone and sustain capability.

In spite of its lower price point, Gibson Sonex electric guitars provided extremely high quality sound and tone. They were an excellent choice for those who couldn't afford the Les Paul models, but wanted the sound and quality of the Gibson guitars. Owners of vintage Gibson Sonex find them to be reliable instruments that can outperform even more expensive Les Paul guitars of their day. Unfortunately, because Gibson Sonex electric guitars were marketed as a beginner guitar, it's somewhat difficult to find one that has been well cared-for.

The Standard and Custom models of Gibson Sonex electric guitars featured two "Dirty Fingers" pickups. The Deluxe had two high-output, exposed humbucking pickups, and the Artist featured two humbucking pickups along with active electronics. All had 3-position toggle switches and a single cutaway body design similar to the one of the Les Paul model. The Deluxe, Standard and Custom models were introduced in 1980. In 1981, the Standard was replaced with the Artist model.

Vintage Gibson Sonex electric guitars can still be found at reasonable prices – less than other vintage Gibson electric guitars. Many of these guitars have stood the test of time and can still provide the versatile, high-quality playing experience you've come to expect from Gibson guitars.
